Fire: Where does it hurt? Where does it comfort? Are we of mud, water, air and fire? If so, where does this fire burn? In the ticking of our heart, in the flow of blood through our veins, in our minds, in our need to survive, in desire, in acceptance, in pleasure and in pain? Fire has been crucial in our proliferation as beings on this planet, to the point where it threatens to destroy us as we huff out the atmosphere of air to breathe.
In an ongoing engagement with the elements, as they become images in my drawing performances, for a duration of three hours, for Open Studio Day, I rendered on the wall of my studio the image of a landscape on fire; in a state of dramatic transformation. Uriel Barthelemi, visual artist and drummer, scored the sound live to feed the mood and tempo of the performance. Sound and image fed each other to take audiences, squeezed into the studio, from silence to explosions and from ‘angelic’ to ‘demonic’.
